The Blank Page
A poem by Laura Grody

This short screenplay was inspired by the one and only poem I've ever written.
There's something about a piece of crisp, white, blank paper - so much potential lies within it. Before it's met with a drop of ink, the world is its oyster - it can become anything we want it to be!
One day it occurred to me that the paper itself might have a thought about that...
The Poem
A blank piece of paper
Stares up at me
“What will you make of me?
What will I be?”
“Will I be a sonnet?
A beautiful rhyme?
Of passioned young lovers
Suspended in time?”
“A sweet melody
Of two turtle doves?
Or knights who slay dragons
To rescue true loves!”
It sees my sharp pencil
And urges me on
“Fill me with beauty
Fill me with song!”
“Make me a tale
Meant for the big screen
Or musical play
Where dancing is seen!”
“Make me a letter
In Spanish or French
From the man to the Pirate
Who captured his Wench”
The blank page stares up at me
Dreamy and white
Awaiting the genius
Inside to ignite
It begs for creation
The pressure increases
It’s driving me mad
I’m falling to pieces
My thoughts are so scattered
Unfocused, disjointed
I must choose words wisely
Lest I disappoint it
The right combination
Of letters, I need
In just the right order
At just the right speed
To make the page happy
To set the page free
To let it rejoice
In the brilliance in me
My pencil is poised
The page waits to be pleased
Then out comes the genius!
Get milk, bread and cheese
